Once or maybe four times, Benjamin and I went into this river in the deep of the night. It smelled bad, but it felt good.
I’ve always been fascinated by a certain stretch of road known around these parts as “The Narrows”. Since I was a child, I’ve noticed both of these structures along the narrows jutting up from the river bank along the train tracks and wondered what they were. They still stand today, the same as they were 25 years ago when I first noticed them. No one locally has been able to determine exactly what they are or what their use was. There has been some speculation that one is a former water pump house, but the other…no idea.
When I was little I used to imagine that they were great ruins of some medieval castle that existed long before anyone ever settled here. Considering this area wasn’t settled until the 18th and 19th centuries, I’m pretty sure there were no castles here (especially ones built out of concrete). But…a kid can dream.
